I need a shop website for selling shirts.
Like any start-up I don't have much cash to chuck at it.
I know you web designer guys will tell me that you get what you pay for and I know you're right.
But financial restrictions mean I can't spend too much on it.
What is the bare minimum I can get away with?
123 offer something called instantsite but that sounds like it could be problematic garbage.
Any advice gratefully received, drinks bought etc.

Actinic would be ideal as it can sit on any hosted site and offers incredible backend control
Thanks for your advice David. Actinic looks like a good place to start.
Actinic allows full control over child products so depending on what you are selling, it will enbale you to set discounts on child products etc where as other less clever sofwtare will not, if that makes sense!
You could have a chat to www.thesitesorcerers.co.uk who are based in Frant, I know they have set up ecommerce sites for various local business and aim to be reasonable, alternatively have a look at www.cocoajam.com, a local firm selling pyjamas online, they used www.activwebdesign.com for their site.
Stephen,

Really does depend on how much you want to spend, how much time you want to commit, and how much you want the process to be automated (as well as end user considerations).

On the cheaper end of the spectrum, PayPal offers a free ecommerce package, with absolutely minimum set up required, and a whole host of other providers also offer a similar low cost service - all the technical gubbins is hosted on their sites, and you just include a wee bit o code on your site...

If it's full blown ecommerce your after - it starts to get more expensive. Not only in time to populate your site with relevant details, but in costs too - software, payment gateways etc.

However, if your site isn't set up correctly for search engines, and it's not marketed well, the cost means nothing. Because you might not get any visitors to the site at all.....

Happy to be bribed with beer anytime..... (or a fine single malt or two...)

Hi,

I have only just joined so I assume you have this sorted as this is an old post.  If not then I totally recommend big commerce: http://www.bigcommerce.com/p/2359-0-3-1.html

They start at about £15 a month and that includes everything including hosting so its a great way to try ecommerce especially as theres no contract and you can stop anytime.

Theres loads of templates so you can easily do one yourself or with a web designer come up with something a bit more funky like the one I have recently completed: www.funkyrascal.co.uk  Shout if you need advice still
