Is your Browser up to Date? (for PC types)

There’s currently more choice in quality browser’s than ever and it’s well worth becoming comfortable with more than one type. In the world of PC browsers we reckon the league table for the current popular models should look something like this.

1. Firefox – Close to perfect
2. Internet Explorer 8, Chrome and Opera – Pretty good
3. Flock – Not bad
4. Internet Explorer 7 – hmmm… OK
5. Every other browser – Better than IE6
6. Internet Explorer 6 – RIP (please help to kill it off ASAP)

Why an earth do 12% of web users (September 2009) still bother with IE6? I can only conclude these people are unaware that they can change things. If you are a dyed in the wool Microsoft type and are happy using Internet Explorer you should upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible and enjoy the benefits of improved security, features and styling built into the latest release. This is important and your internet security is definitely compromised if you are running out of date browser software.

A good idea also is to download Firefox, install it, test drive it and then leave it as a spare for use if you’re version of Internet Explorer does something a bit strange and you want to check it against another browser.

With the arrival of version 8, things have improved significantly for users of Internet Explorer, but with Firefox around and so good why bother with anything else? Well – apart from Apple’s Safari 4.0 of course, probably the most sophisticated browser on the market, which is free , easy to install, runs beautifully (on my little Dell laptop at least) and supports more of the CSS3 specification than nearly every other browser. But then I would say something like that, I really like Macs.

Nice post Michael.

I would image that the 12% are mainly people that just aren't aware that they can upgrade or are just too frightened to. In my experience the more senior computer users (and some less senior but technophobic) amongst us are just relieved that they can get the thing switched on in the first place let alone change the software that they know.

Like the new website by the way. Hope to chat at the next meeting, didn't get chance to last time.
